Lori Ann Blakeley
(June 20, 1985 - May 4, 2005)

Lori's other photographs http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_photos_jpeg/loriblakeley_other_photographs.htm

Lori's 2003 - 2004 High School Graduation Class at First Baptist Academy (downtown), Dallas, Texas and some photographs taken with a few of her class members. http://www.loriblakeley.name/FBA_2004_graduation_class_members.htm

Lori's 12-page scrapbook that she worked on for over 2 weeks. She completed this project of hers just prior to her last trip to Bethesda. I personally observed her determination to complete this scrapbook even with the pain and discomfort she was experiencing. http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_scrapbook/loriblakeley_scrapbook.htm

This poem truly reflects Lori's feelings about leaving those she knew and loved behind:

If I should ever leave you whom I love
To go along the silent way,
Grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears,
But laugh and talk of me
As if I were beside you there.

(I'd come - I'd come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?)

And when you hear a song or
See a bird I loved,
Please do not let the thought of me be sad...
For I am loving you just as I always have...
You were so good to me!

There are so many things I wanted still to do -
So many things to say to you...
Remember that I did not fear
It was just leaving you that was so hard to face...
We cannot see beyond...
But this I know:
I love you so -

'twas heaven here with you!

- "To Those I Loved," Isla Paschal Richardson (1886-1971)

Loriís Web site is a tribute to a wonderful daughter of mine - the type of daughter any father and mother would love to have had.

It is a tremendous burden on my heart and soul to experience the sadness of what seems to inevitably happen to everyone who leaves us - the memory of Lori by her friends, whom she loved and whom loved her as well, will progressively become a distant memory in the minds and hearts of these friends. Each of their lives were touched by Lori in different ways.

So how long will I attempt to prevent this from happening to Lori, as well as myself? Until I am laid to rest alongside her.

- a "Borrowed Angel"

They shine a little brighter.
They feel a little more.
They touch your life in ways no one has ever done before.
They love a little stronger.
They live to give their best.
They make our lives so blessed.
So why do they go so soon -
the ones with souls so beautiful?
I heard someone say,
"There must be borrowed angels here in this life.
They come along into this world
and make this world bright.
But they can't stay forever
'cause they're Heaven sent
and sometimes Heaven needs them back again."

They reach a little deeper
to see what's in your soul.
And even when they leave, you know,
you'll never let them go.
The world's a little richer
just 'cause they came along.
Their love goes on and on.
So why do they go so soon -
the ones with souls so beautiful?
I heard someone say,
"There must be borrowed angels here in this life.
They come along into this world
and make this world bright.
But they can't stay forever
'cause they're Heaven sent
and sometimes Heaven needs them back again."

How else can you explain
why they're here and not here to stay?
I believe there must be, must be,
borrowed angels here in this life.
They come along into this world
and make this world bright.
But they can't stay forever
'cause they're Heaven sent
and sometimes Heaven needs them back again.
Sometimes Heaven needs them back again.

- "Borrowed Angels" MP3 Audio/Lyrics http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_music/borrowed_angels.htm

... Once a crystal choir
Appeared while I was sleepin' and called my name
And when they came down nearer
Sayin', "Dyin' is done,"
Then a new song was sung
Until somewhere we breathed as one

And still I hear their whisper ...

- "The Kiss," Judee Sill MP3 Audio/Lyrics http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_music/the_kiss.htm

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday

- "Yesterday" MP3 Audio/Lyrics

"Our prayers have all been answered.
I finally arrived.
The healing that had been delayed has now been realized.
No one's in a hurry.
There's no schedule to keep.
We're all enjoying Jesus, just sitting at His feet.

[... "Praise for them springing fresh from the Word ...
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass...

- "Morning Has Broken" MP3 Audio/Lyrics]

If you could see me now, I'm walking streets of gold.
If you could see me now, I'm standing tall and whole.

["... His voice to me is calling
And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me
I am His own

- "He Walks With Me (In the Garden)" MP3 Audio/Lyrics, Anne Murray]

If you could see me now, you'd know the pain is erased.
You wouldn't want me to ever leave this place,
If you could only see me now..."

- "If You Could See Me Now" MP3 Audio/Lyrics
A beautiful solo rendition of the above song was performed by Dick Kendrick (First Baptist Church) at Lori's funeral services.

"A beloved daughter, sister, friend, and child of God. In Christ, her loving soul remains."

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there
I do not sleep
...

Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there
I did not die

- "Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep" MP3 Audio/Lyrics http://www.royblakeley.name/larry_blakeley/poetry/do_not_stand_at_grave_weep.htm

" ... What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind ..."

"... We can cry with hope
We can say goodbye with hope
'Cause we know our goodbye is not the end, oh no
And we can grieve with hope
'Cause we believe with hope
(There's a place by God's grace)
There's a place where we'll see your face again
We'll see your face again..."

- "With Hope" MP3 Audio/Lyrics

The above is a portion of the lyrics to the music playing on the photo montage video ("Lori Blakeley - a Celebration of Life Photo Montage") shown at Lori's funeral services.

I am using a hosting company called Stream Hoster http://streamhoster.com/index.html to deliver this streaming video over the Internet. The photographs in this video were selected by Lori's dear friend, Ashley Devling, Lori's sister, Leslie, and Jackie. Ashley is in the video where the two of them are asleep in the back seat of a car, another where they are touching heads together, and the small collage with photographs taken on a trip they took together to Florida ("Best Friends Forever, I Love You"). Ashley delivered these videos and the song played in the background to the media group department at First Baptist Church, Dallas and they put together the video for presentation at Lori's funeral services.

The photographs of Lori in the video where she is wearing a formal address was at Leslie's (Leslie http://www.leslieadkins.name) wedding on May 4, 2002. Lori was a bridesmaid. Lori left us 3 years later to the day.

Shortly after Lori learned that she had cancer she wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love http://www.locksoflove.org/ before it fell out from chemotherapy treatments. I accompanied her to get it cut off. Ten (10) inches was the minimum and she had just enough for donation. I subsequently scanned her beautiful long hair before sending it to Locks of Love and placed the image on her Web site describing what she had elected to do. Lori and her mother, Jackie bought a wig that matched Lori's hair color and length pretty well. Lori told me she did not want others to know she was wearing a wig. She asked me to remove the scanned image from her Web site and I did. I never got around to sending Lori's hair to Locks of Love. You can view the scanned image of Lori's hair here. http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_photos_jpeg/loriblakeley_other_photographs.htm

Lori started this cross stitch project - "A Day at the Beach" - after being transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the Inpatient Unit of the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center. We framed it and left her needle in the fabric right where she left it. http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_cross_stitch_beach.djvu

And this is what Lori said to her dear friend, Ashley Devling http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_scrapbook/loriblakeley_scrapbook.htm, with the knowledge that she would die soon - and just days before she left this earthly world:

"I am OK with this. I don't understand 'why,' but I believe ... I believe God ... is using me and my situation in some way to bring someone closer to Him. I have prayed and asked Him, 'Who is this person,' but, as yet, He has not answered."

Now, be aware, that Lori's voice, as well as her entire being, was very weak and for her to get out these words took a determined effort and a long time to express this to Ashley.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

- "Blackbird," Paul McCartney (Beatles) MP3 Audio/Lyrics http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_music/blackbird.htm

Note: Lori's remark to Ashley led me to write the article titled "I Believe," listed on my articles Web page. http://www.royblakeley.name/larry_blakeley/articles/articles_larry_blakeley.htm

Happiness lives for those who cry,
those who hurt,
those who have searched,
and those who have tried,
for only they can appreciate
the importance of people
who have touched their lives.

Lori wanted to go see at least one baseball game of Evan's at Cistercian Preparatory School - so on April 21, 2005 we took her. After the baseball game she asked one of the mothers (Janice Flanigan) to take a family photograph using her (Lori's) Canon PowerShot S410 digital camera. http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_photos_jpeg/larryblakeley_family20050421.jpg

Several days later (April 23, 2005) she wanted to be photographed with her puppies, Allie and Lucy.

Several days later (April 23, 2005) she wanted to be photographed with her puppies, Allie and Lucy. These are the last photographs of Lori:

Her body showed the effects of the cancer, but her spirit and soul still shined through her wonderful eyes and brilliant smile - a distinct trait of character she retained throughout her last days here on earth.

" ... So we don't get into the habit of standing back and looking at our lives and saying, Is this it? Is this all I want? Is something missing?'

Lori's favorite Bible verses here http://www.loriblakeley.name/loriblakeley_favorite_bible_verses.htm

*****************************************************************

"Caretaker of the Children of God," http://www.loriblakeley.name/caretaker_of_children_of_God.htm is a poem I wrote for another child of God's caregiver (Lynette, the mother of Sydney Thweatt http://www.loriblakeley.name/sydney_thweatt/sydney_thweatt.htm).

As to the maturity/innocence level of our children we witnessed our beloved daughter of just 19 years old go through a six (6) month journey that began with innocence and ended with the maturity of a person that had lived a long life and accepted that it was time to move on "to the other side." Personally, I cried over the telephone when she called me with the news from Lubbock that they found a tumor and she called the oldest daughter to stop by and see about me because I was very upset. Lori (only once) cried out at one point in front of Jackie and I and said, "it's just not fair." Jackie and I both sobbed and agreed with her. This was the second time that I cried in front of her. In her concern for our well-being she never let her guard down again, forever worried about our well-being, even as we watched her take her last breath here on earth. And, I honored her courage and concern for her parents by never crying again in front of her. She did whisper in my ear though right after her unsuccessful surgery and said, "Daddy if you need to cry you can always go into the waiting room."

In times like these your children will be most concerned with their loved ones as was exemplified by Lori 10 days before she died she turned to me and said, "Daddy I want you to go into my bedroom and get a book from the bookshelf for you to read later. It is called ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul,'" (written by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor).

You see, when your children love you they want to protect and be of service to you. Lori's story and evidence of her belief in God and our Lord Jesus Christ as documented here on her Web site.

It is my hope that you will know Lori as we did.
